Happy Thanksgiving you all!!

Hope you had a fantastic day with family and friends!

Just wanted to post this sequence of me doing a tribute straightline to the late Shane McConkey. This was shot by Adam Clarke.

The story goes like this..

I was setting up the bar at the Peruvian Lodge when I heard the news. I could not  believe it, I was in total shock. He was a great person and good friend, who happened to be on my mind a lot that week. I went into my normal state of inebriation when a friend passes. My way of sending off a friend, celebrating his life, life in general and drowning my sorrows. Needles to say I had to take the night off. After a foggy night, I somehow heard the phone ring.

Brant Moles Straightline in Cardiac

Adam Clarke and Jamey Parks were heading up to get Cardiac. I knew there was a striaghtline I had never done up there and told them I was in. They picked me up and mentioned the fact that I still smelled like Whiskey. They were right. But I was determined to straightline in Shane’s honor because back in the day we both really liked to straightline stuff. Back in the early and mid 90’s nobody straightlined lines. We where way into pushing ourselves and pushing the sport of skiing. This was one of many reasons we hung out a lot and skied together often. Those were great days. So I figured no water or food was a good way to go on a few hour hike. I also had to be at work by 3:30pm. Just go up ski the line and get back for work. No problem right? Obviously I was not prepared for this endeavor or in any shape to take on this challenge this day. Oh well. We started hiking. Early on Jamey and Adam were well ahead of me. By the top of Flagstaff I was worked. By the time I was post holing up the last steep zone of Cardiac Jamey was already dropping in his line. An hour later, near the top, my legs started to cramp from severe dehydration. I started to really wonder if I could pull this off. I still had to make it to the top, straightline the line, then hike back out to the ridge and ski the 2000 vert back to the valley and go to work. The no water idea was failing and I had to stop and eat snow for awhile. After another 20 min. I had worked out the cramps and made my way to the top. Amazingly enough Adam had waited for me so I got ready to drop in.

The conditions were good, some new snow and wind  had smoothed out my exit. It was on. THIS ONE IS FOR YOU SHANE! DROPPING! It felt good to get up to speed and get wind in my face.

When I came to a stop I was super stoked to have made it and thought Shane would be proud. Adam was stoked, said he was done waiting for me and we could catch up later. Cool. The good feeling I had carried me though the hike out and down to work. I barely made it. Long Effing day.

The shots were never published. But that is O.K.. Shane and I know, that is all that matters.

Thanks to Jamey and Adam for putting up with my junk show. Thank you all for listening.

I know Shane still inspires all of us. So go out there and get some!!
